Vietnamese lawyers association convenes 13th congress

The 13th congress of the Vietnamese Lawyers Association (VLA) opened on September 13 in Hanoi with the participation of 300 delegates representing over 63,000 members of the association.

In a report to the congress, VLA Secretary General Le Minh Tam reviewed the association’s contributions to law and policy formulation during the 2014-2019 period.

He also highlighted the legal advice and assistance services provided by its local chapters in the past five years.

Speaking at the congress, Politburo member and Permanent member of the Secretariat Tran Quoc Vuong praised the efforts and achievements that the VLA has recorded in the 12th tenure.

He noted that the association needs to stick closely to Party and State’s viewpoints, increase political education and professional ethics for its members, and encourage its members to play an active part in building a society that respects laws.

The senior Party official also asked the VLA to take part in policy and law debates, and the process of judicial and administrative reform as well as promoting cooperation with international lawyers association.

At the congress, Politburo member Vuong awarded the Order of Friendship to Jeanne Mirer, President of the International Association of Democratic Lawyers, for her contributions to developing the friendship and cooperation between Vietnamese and international lawyers.
