Hanoi names ten most prominent events of 2020

The Hanoi municipal authorities have announced the ten most outstanding events in the capital city during 2020 as follows:

1. Successfully organising the Party Congress at all levels and the 17th Congress of the Hanoi Municipal Party Committee’s 2020-2025 term.

As the largest party committee in the country, amid the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Hanoi Party Committee has been serious and creative in successfully organising the congresses of 17,118 Party cells, 2,310 Party grassroots organisations and 50 Party committees at higher levels.

2. Effectively implementing the "dual goal" of both fighting COVID-19 and boosting economic development combined with ensuring social security.

As a key locality with a huge number of people subjected to screening, isolation and treatment for COVID-19, the capital city has promptly and effectively implemented response measures. In parallel with economic development solutions, the capital's economy recovered strongly in the fourth quarter with a GRDP growth rate of 5.77%. The GRDP for the whole year has increased by 3.98%, about 1.4 times higher than the national average. Consumer price index was controlled at 2.67%. State budget revenue is estimated at VND280.5 trillion, exceeding the estimate and up 3.9% compared to 2019.

3. Successfully organising various activities to celebrate the country and capital city’s major holidays.

In 2020, Hanoi City has successfully organised many activities to celebrate the major holidays, such as the 90th anniversary of the establishment of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the 90th anniversary of the establishment of the Hanoi Party Committee, the 75th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day, the 1010th anniversary of Thang Long - Hanoi, the 130th birthday of President Ho Chi Minh, and the National Patriotic Emulation Congress.

4. The National Assembly approved a resolution on piloting a number of specific financial - budget mechanisms and policies for Hanoi. The city has implemented the resolution to pilot the urban government model.

On June 19, 2020, the National Assembly passed Resolution No. 115/2020/QH14 on piloting a number of specific financial - budget mechanisms and policies for Hanoi. The resolution has contributed to helping the capital city mobilise more financial resources for its socio-economic development over the next five years, while creating an effective support and cooperation mechanism among districts in the city.

5. Successfully organising the "Hanoi 2020 – Investment and Development Cooperation" conference in a special context.

The "Hanoi 2020 – Investment and Development Cooperation" conference was held by the capital city on June 27, 2020. This is the first and largest conference in the country and the region in 2020 with more than 2,500 participants from both domestic and international enterprises. At the conference, Hanoi awarded investment certificates to 229 projects, with a total capital of VND405.5 trillion (US$17.6 billion).

6. Agricultural development and new rural area construction achieved comprehensive and outstanding results.

Hanoi has completed the goal of building new countryside areas two years in advance, with seven districts and towns and 367 out of 382 communes recognised as meeting the new rural area construction standards (equal to 96.3%), along with 23 communes recognised as meeting the new rural advanced standards. Hanoi's agricultural production grew by 4.2% - the highest growth rate in the last nine years. There are nearly 1,000 'One Commune One Product' (OCOP) products recognised in Hanoi, accounting for 35.52% of the country's OCOP products.

7. Major traffic projects put into use.

Many key transport works within the city's important traffic infrastructure have been completed and put into operation, contributing to improving the urban framework and reducing traffic congestion. The city completed the plantation of additional 600,000 trees.

8. Hanoi’s education and training sector continues to affirm its leading position in quality.

In the academic year 2019-2020, together with the whole country, the Hanoi education sector has actively responded to the complicated developments of the COVID-19 epidemic, ensuring safety for more than two million local students. Hanoi has promptly deployed solutions towards applying information technology in the education sector, being the first locality in the country to deploy teaching via television, along with distance education methods to ensure the best learning conditions for students.

9. The "Hanoi for the whole country" spirit has been strongly promoted.

This year, right after the first COVID-19 wave was put under control, the city has continuously organised events to promote economic development and tourism, as well as hosted cultural weeks in coordination with localities across the country, contributing a part to promoting regional linkage and development cooperation among localities in the country.

The Vietnam Fatherland Front chapters at all levels in Hanoi have held various practical activities in mobilising all sectors, businesses and a large number of local residents to make donations to social activities with the largest total funding mobilised ever. The city’s Fatherland Front Committee has received donations worth VND243 trillion to support the COVID-19 fight, while also receiving support worth over VND124.8 billion in both cash and goods to compensate the consequences of natural disasters, as well as mobilising VND44 billion for the Fund for Vietnam’s Seas and Islands.

10. Political security and social order and safety are guaranteed.

Hanoi has continued in its efforts to ensure national defence while absolutely ensuring social security and safety for key targets and locations in the capital city, with nearly 2,000 political, socio-cultural events and international conferences, as well as the Party, State leaders and foreign delegations’ activities having taken place in the city.
