NA discusses replacement of outgoing NA chairwoman

The National Assembly (NA) Standing Committee on March 30 started the process of dismissing NA Chairwoman cum Chairwoman of the National Election Council (NEC) Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan.

This morning, the process was started, with NA Standing Vice Chairwoman Tong Thi Phong, on behalf of the NA Standing Committee, delivering the committee’s report on the dismissal of the 14th NA Chairperson and the NEC Chairperson.

The report stated that Ngan, member of the 12th-tenure Politburo, was elected as NA Chairwoman at the first session of the 14th NA and as the NEC Chair at the legislature’s ninth session.

During her tenure as both the NA and NEC Chairpersons, she fulfilled her assigned tasks successfully, the report affirmed.

Due to the requirements of senior personnel work of the Party and State after the 13th National Party Congress and pursuant to the Resolution No. 01 dated March 9, 2021 by the 13th Party Central Committee, the Constitution, the Law on Organisation of the NA, and the Law on Election of Deputies to the NA and People’s Councils and the rules of the ongoing NA meeting, the NA Standing Committee decided to submit to the NA the replacement of the 14th NA Chairperson and the Chairperson of the NEC.

NA deputies then discussed in groups the replacement of the NA Chairperson and the NEC Chairperson.

In the afternoon, the NA is expected to conduct the process of replacement of the NA Chairperson and the NEC Chairperson by secret ballot.

According to the agenda, also this afternoon, the NA Standing Committee submitted a list of nominations for the legislature to fill the two posts.

After that, NA deputies discussed in groups the proposed personnel to elect as NA Chairperson and the NEC Chairperson.

Born in Ben Tre province in 1954, Ngan was the first female NA Chairperson of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

She was a member of the Party Central Committee for the 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th terms, member of the Politburo for its 9th and 12th terms, and secretary of the 11th Party Central Committee. Ngan was also a NA deputy for the 12th, 13th and 14th terms.

She holds a bachelor's degree in State budget-finance, a master’s degree in economics and a bachelor’s degree in political theory.

Before being elected Chairwoman of the 14th NA on March 31, 2016, Ngan held various positions, including Deputy Minister of Finance, Secretary of the Hai Duong Provincial Party Committee, Deputy Minister of Commerce, Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs NA Vice Chairperson.
