Vietnam enters 2020 with confidence

The year 2019 has just come to a close with a complex and unpredictable international situation. Global economic and trade growth slowed while strategic competition and trade tensions intensified between major powers. Within the region, the East Sea situation was also complicated while at home internal economic weaknesses, natural disasters, climate change and epidemics have seriously affected production and the people’s lives.

The praiseworthy socio-economic development results that were achieved by Vietnam in 2019 are a bright spot and a firm foundation for 2020.
The praiseworthy socio-economic development results that were achieved by Vietnam in 2019 are a bright spot and a firm foundation for 2020.

Against such a backdrop, Vietnam has comprehensively fulfilled all the socio-economic targets thanks to the solidarity and aggressive efforts of the entire Party, people and armed forces. Macroeconomic stability was sustained and economic growth was maintained at a high level, making Vietnam one of the fastest-growing economies in the region and the world.

Numerous important results were also recorded in the fields of culture and social affairs, helping to maintain political stability, social order and safety. The standard of living has been improved for the people.

Party building and the construction of a rules-based socialist state have recorded many positive results. The drive against corruption was stepped up with visible and specific results and was broadly endorsed by Party members and the people.

National defence and security was strengthened, political security and social order were maintained, and a peaceful and stable environment for development was ensured. External relations and international integration activities were deepened and Vietnam’s position on the international stage was heightened.

It’s exactly what General Secretary and President Nguyen Phu Trong has affirmed after 50 years of implementing President Ho Chi Minh’s Testament, “Vietnam has never before recorded such a great accomplishment as today!”

Amid global and regional difficulty, the praiseworthy socio-economic development results that were achieved by Vietnam in 2019 are a bright spot and a firm foundation for 2020 - the final year of implementing the resolution of the 12th National Party Congress.

2020 is a highly significant year which marks the 90th founding anniversary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the 130th birth anniversary of President Ho Chi Minh, the 75th national founding anniversary and the 45th anniversary of the southern liberation and national reunification. It is also a year when local Party congresses will be held in the lead-up to the 13th National Party Congress.

It has been predicted that the global and regional situation will continue to develop in a complicated and unpredictable manner. At home, weaknesses remain in the socio-economic development and the country is expected to continue facing numerous challenges.

Such a context requires the entire Party, people and armed forces to continue promoting unity, making greater efforts and taking bold actions in order to overcome all difficulties and challenges and victoriously realise the set targets.

The tasks for the new year include stabilising the macroeconomy, curbing inflation, enhancing labour productivity and competitiveness of the economy; pushing through institutional reform and creating a conducive business environment; stepping up economic restructuring aligned with renewing the growth model; accelerating the progress of key national projects and promoting the role of major economic regions and cities; developing a high-quality workforce and promoting innovations; stepping up environmental protection, disaster management and response to climate change; continuing to streamline and slim the state apparatus, bolster administrative and judicial reform, and enhance law enforcement; intensifying discipline and the fight against corruption and wastefulness; and strengthening national defence and security.

In addition, it is necessary to successfully fulfil the roles of ASEAN chairmanship, AIPA 41 presidency, and as non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2020-2021 term; and to firmly maintain independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and a peaceful and stable environment and enhance Vietnam’s position on the international stage.

In a new year, the entire Party, people and armed forces of Vietnam will build on the achievements of 2019 and the patriotic tradition to record even greater accomplishments, wrapping up a victorious term, taking the country to a new period of development with confidence and on firm foundations.
