Lao General Secretary and President pays official visit to Vietnam

Lao General Secretary cum President Thongloun Sisoulith, along with his spouse and a high-ranking delegation, is paying an official visit to Vietnam from June 28-29 at the invitation of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and President Nguyen Xuan Phuc.

His entourage includes Deputy Prime Minister cum Defence Minister Chansamone Chanyalath, Deputy Prime Minister cum Minister of Planning and Investment Sonexay Siphandone, Head of the Central Commission for Organisation Sisay Leudetmounsone, Foreign Minister Saleumxay Kommasith, and other senior officials.

Lao General Secretary cum President Thongloun Sisoulith was born on November 10, 1945, in Houaphanh Province. He graduated from the Neo Lao Hak Sat College of Education in Laos. He also obtained a master’s degree in language and literature at the Herzen State Pedagogical University in Russia and a PhD in history of international relations at the Moscow Institute of Social Sciences.

From 1967 to 1986, he held various posts at the Neo Lao Hak Sat Department of Education, the representative office of Neo Lao Hak Sat in Hanoi, Vientiane University, the Ministry of Education and the Prime Minister’s Office.

He served as Deputy Foreign Minister from 1987-1992, Minister of Labour and Social Welfare from 1993-1996, Chairman of the Lao National Assembly’s Committee for External Relations from 1997-2001, Deputy Prime Minister from 2001-2006, and Deputy Prime Minister cum Foreign Minister from June 2006-March 2016.

Thongloun Sisoulith took on the role of Prime Minister from April 2016 to March 2021.

He was elected as General Secretary of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party at the first meeting of its 11th Central Committee on January 15, 2021, and elected as President of Laos at the first meeting of the 9th Lao National Assembly on March 22, 2021.
