Vietnamese President’s visit to Russia opens up many cooperation opportunities for the two nations

Professor Dr. Kirill Babaev, Director of the Institute of Far Eastern Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IFES RAS), said that President Nguyen Xuan Phuc's official visit to Russia will contribute to strengthening dialogue on many important issues and opening up new cooperation directions between the two countries.

Talking to the Nhan Dan (People) Newspaper reporter in Russia, Prof. Kirill Babaev emphasised the important significance of President Nguyen Xuan Phuc’s official visit to Russia from November 29 to December 2.

The Russian expert noted that this is one of the first international trips by President Phuc serving in his new position. It continues the tradition of regular contacts between Russian and Vietnamese high-ranking leaders, while enhancing dialogue on important issues in their relations.

Prof. Kirill Babaev expected that the leaders of the two countries would also exchange their views on the latest events and trends in the Asia-Pacific region.

He noted that Russia has always attached great importance to developing the comprehensive strategic partnership with Vietnam.The year 2022 will be a special milestone, marking the 10th anniversary of the Vietnam – Russia comprehensive strategic partnership. Regarding the results of the two nations’ joint efforts, their military-technical cooperation has developed actively; meanwhile, the economic and trade sectors have great positivepotential.

According to Prof. Kirill Babaev, the Russian leader has repeatedly stated that in addition to the long-standing and close friendship, Vietnam is also a gateway to Southeast Asia and a “bridge” to connect Russia with ASEAN. ASEAN, one of the pillars of Russia's most important international economic project,called Greater Eurasian Partnership.

The cooperation in response to the COVID-19 pandemic is also an important issue mentioned by Prof. Kirill Babaev. According to the Russian scholar, the pandemic has caused many losses, but created new opportunities for the cooperation between the two countries. Russia is always willing to coordinate with Vietnam in the fight against COVID-19. Vietnam wants Russia to support and cooperate in the production of vaccines throughout Vietnam. He expressed his belief that this issue will be addressed during President Phuc’s business trip.

The Russian expert said a series of other issues concerning the two countries’ operation will be discussed by both leaders. The visit will offer an opportunity for Russians to learn more about Vietnam, which is not only a reliable political and economic partner but also a favourite destination. Thousands of Russians are waiting for the opening of Vietnam's hospitable cities and resorts.

Prof. Kirill Babaev said in order to contribute to boosting the development of Russia-Vietnam relations, the Institute of Far Eastern Studies will continue its cooperation with traditional partners in Vietnam through many forms such as organising scientific seminars, publishing monographs and publications, and accelerating common projects. The Institute’s Director also hoped that the two countries would quickly restore the acceptance of internships for young scientists. The Institute of Far Eastern Studies always welcomes Vietnamese guests.
