Among attendees were Dinh The Huynh, Politburo member and head of the Party Central Committee (PCC) Commission for Communication and Education; Hoang Binh Quan, head of the PCC Commission for External Relations; Mai Van Chinh, deputy head of the PCC Commission for Organisation; Thuan Huu, Editor-in-chief of Nhan Dan Newspaper and President of the Vietnam Journalists’ Association; 13 representatives from diplomatic agencies in Vietnam and over 300 international and domestic correspondents.

Addressing the event, Politburo member Huynh noted that the regular congress, held every five years, would look back on the 30 years of the Doi Moi (Renovation) process, evaluate the implementation of the Resolution of the 11th National Party Congress and work out directions, tasks and measures for national development, construction and defence in the next five years.

The theme of the 12th Congress is to strengthen the building of a strong and transparent Party, promote the great national unity bloc and socialist democracy, push the ‘Doi Moi’ reform ahead in an inclusive and synchronous manner, ensuring national defence and a stable peaceful environment, and strive to promptly develop Vietnam into a modern industrialised country, Huynh said.

He added that the Congress would discuss for approval a political report of the 11th tenure Party Central Committee as well as reports on evaluating outcomes of implementing socio-economic tasks in the 2011-2015 period and orientations for the 2016-2020 period, reviewing leadership and direction of the 11th tenure PCC, reviewing execution of the 11th tenure Party’s Charter and recommending necessary supplements and revisions, and implementing the 11th tenure PCC Resolution No. 4 on Party building.

The Congress will see the attendance of over 1,500 delegates representing more than 4.5 million members of the CPV.

According to Huynh, preparations for the 12th Congress have been completed. On the occasion, the CPV has already delivered letters officially announcing its organisation of the Congress to political parties, organisations and international friends, and invited representatives of diplomatic corps and international organisations in Vietnam to attend the opening and closing sessions of the Congress.

At the press briefing, correspondents were informed of the preparation process for documents and basic principles of the documents to be submitted to the 12th Congress; the quantity, quality and academic level and level of political theory of delegates in attendance; and outcomes and foreign policy of the Vietnamese Party and State.

Answering queries from international and domestic reporters, those presiding over the press conference analysed key contents and new points in the documents to be presented to the 12th Congress, the key issues commented on by people of all classes, and operational statute and personnel work of the Congress.

Also at the event, a press centre was launched to serve the 12th National Party Congress. Over 650 domestic and 120 international correspondents have registered to operate at the press centre and cover the Congress so far.

A total of 156 international organisations and political parties extended congratulations to the CPV for its 12th National Congress.
