The event, jointly held by the Algerian Embassy in Vietnam, the Algeria-Vietnam Friendship Association, and the USSH, aimed to mark the 55th anniversary of Vietnam-Algeria diplomatic relations.

Addressing the ceremony, Algerian Ambassador to Vietnam Mohamed Berrah said that Vietnam and Algeria enjoyed sound relations even before they first established diplomatic relations in 1962.

The two countries have supported each other not only in their past struggle against invaders, but also in their process of national development, he noted.

Rector of the USSH, Professor Pham Quang Minh said that the celebration was a good chance to help younger generation to learn about the time-honoured relations and solidarity that exists between the two countries.

The event also featured the screening of ‘Fleur de Lotus’ (Lotus), a film by an Algerian filmmaker on a romance between an Algerian soldier and a Vietnamese woman during the war in Vietnam.

Statistics showed that two-way trade between Vietnam and Algeria has grown well each year, reaching about US$270 million in 2016 and is likely to hit US$300 million in 2017.

The two sides are working together to raise the figure to US$1 billion in 2020. Algeria is currently the third largest partner of Vietnam in Africa.
