Speaking at the meeting, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc expressed his thanks to the GEF Secretariat for choosing Vietnam as the host for the upcoming sixth GEF assembly and associated meetings.

The Government leader emphasised that Vietnam attaches great importance to addressing environmental issues in the country’s development process, stating that Vietnam wishes to intensify its cooperation with the GEF and hopes the GEF will assist Vietnam in the implementation of forest ecosystem services, forest production, and food security at the local level in the context of the implementation of the United Nations to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).

Vietnam also needs assistance in implementing projects on ocean waste treatment, especially plastic waste, as well as addressing the challenges of climate change and sea level rise in the Mekong Delta, he noted.

For her part, Naoko Ishii said Vietnam is making positive progress in solving environmental problems.

However, Vietnam still faces major environmental challenges in the process of development, she noted, adding that the GEF hopes to assist Vietnam in addressing the issues related to ocean waste, and other hot environmental issues affecting the Mekong Delta.
