Politburo member Minh made the remark while holding talks with US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, in Hanoi on July 9, during which he applauded the significance of the guest’s Vietnam visit to the relations between the two countries.

Pompeo affirmed that the US attaches importance to its friendly ties and all-around cooperation with Vietnam, while backing a strong, independent and prosperous Vietnam with an increasingly important role in the region.

The two sides agreed to continue deepening the Vietnam-US comprehensive partnership for the benefits of the two countries’ people, and for peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world.

They agreed to facilitate the exchange of delegations, especially at a high level, continue considering trade and investment cooperation as a driver for their bilateral ties, actively implement the defence agreements between the two nations, and strengthen education-training cooperation and people-to-people exchanges.

Both sides expressed their satisfaction at the successful implementation of the dioxin detoxification project at Da Nang airport. The officials also discussed regional and international issues of mutual concern, including the East Sea issue. They expressed their concern over the complicated proceedings in the East Sea over recent times, while reiterating their support for the peaceful settlement of disputes in line with international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), the full implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of the Parties in the East Sea (DOC), and the prompt finalisation of an effective and legally binding Code of Conduct (COC) in the East Sea.

The two sides agreed to strengthen their exchanges and coordination at regional and international forums, maintain the central role of ASEAN in addressing regional issues, and accelerate the ASEAN-US strategic partnership in a solid and effective manner, thereby contributing to maintaining peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world.

Deputy PM Minh spoke highly of the recent efforts made by the parties concerned in promoting the peace process and denuclearisation on the Korean Peninsula, affirming that Vietnam supports all constructive efforts and dialogue approaches aimed at the goal of denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula, and will continue to be an active and responsible member of the international community in this process.

On the same day, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo left Hanoi, concluding his official two-day visit to Vietnam.
