The Vietnamese official, who is on an official visit to Cuba, made the remarks during her meeting with Raul Castro, First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba Central Committee, and Miguel Diaz-Canel, President of the Council of State and the Council of Ministers of Cuba, on July 9 (local time).

Vice President Thinh conveyed the regards of senior Vietnamese leaders to the Cuban leaders, affirming that Vietnam always stands side by side with Cuba in the cause of national defence, construction and development, while protesting and requesting the termination of the encirclement and embargo policies against Cuba.

The two sides reviewed the historic landmarks of Vietnam-Cuba relations as well as the special contributions made by the two great leaders Ho Chi Minh and Fidel Castro to bilateral ties, while highlighting the significance of the two countries’ coordination in organising activities to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Vietnam-Cuba diplomatic relations (December 2, 1960-2020).

The Cuban leaders highly valued Vietnam’s solidarity and support for the Cuban Revolution, especially in the current period when Cuba is implementing the process of updating the socio-economic model in the context of complicated regional and international affairs. They agreed to work with the Vietnamese side to implement the outcomes of recent high-level visits between the two countries, thereby bringing bilateral cooperation into depth and contributing practically to the development of Vietnam and Cuba.

On the same day, Vice President Thinh and the high-ranking Vietnamese delegation visited the Vietnam-Cuba rice-producing cooperation project (phase 5) in Pinar del Rio Province.

The project is being implemented on the basis of an agreement signed between the two governments in March 2018 for the period of 2019-2023, serving the goal of continuing to support Cuba in rice development, contributing to ensuring food security through the enhancement of the capabilities to research, produce and improve the agricultural promotion system from central to local levels, towards increasing Cuba’s rice productivity by 30% within the next five years.

Later in the evening, Vice President Thinh and Cuba’s Culture Minister Alpidio Alonso Grau attended the opening ceremony of the “Vietnam Culture Days in Cuba”, which is part of the events to mark 60 years of Vietnam-Cuba diplomatic ties.
