Cambodian official hails consistency of Vietnam’s socialist path

Vietnamese Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong’s article “Several theoretical and practical issues on socialism and the path towards socialism in Vietnam” affirmed that national independence associated with socialism is the basic line of the Vietnamese revolution and also the key point in the ideological heritage of President Ho Chi Minh, said Keo Baphnom, Member of the Party Central Committee, Minister, Head of the Historical Research Department of the Cambodian People’s Party.

The Cambodian official emphasised that the Party General Secretary’s article is a valuable lesson of the Vietnamese revolution with a very complete and clear analysis, evaluation and summary of the theory and practice over the past 90 years of the Communist Party of Vietnam's, contributing to enriching the theoretical treasures of Marxism-Leninism and Ho Chi Minh Thought on national independence associated with socialism.

All the victories of the Vietnamese revolution over the past 90 years have stemmed from the steadfastness of the CPV, the strength, aspiration and belief of the Vietnamese people in socialism - the inevitable development path of the Vietnamese revolution. This is one of the great lessons and invaluable legacies of the Vietnamese revolution. Since its founding in 1930, in its political platform, the CPV has advocated for a people's democratic national revolution, led by the working class, towards socialism, without the capitalist stage.

During the revolutionary fight, the CPV has led the Vietnamese nation through great strides. It was the fight for national independence against the French colonialists, the 21-year resistance war against the US imperialists for national reunification in 1975, then the war to protect the south-western and northern borders, alongside the people of Cambodia to overthrow the genocidal gangs of Pol Pot and build the country back up. During this arduous struggle, the Vietnamese people under the leadership of the CPV always remained steadfast, moving towards the goal and along the path of socialism.

The Cambodian official cited that 1986 can be considered an outstanding year when Vietnam began to carry out its Doi Moi (Renewal) process. After the 6th National Party Congress - the Congress of “Doi Moi” (December 1986), the 7th National Congress of the CPV (June 1991) was conducted in a very complicated international context, the severe crisis of the socialist regime in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe and where the world order was changing.

Thanks to the implementation of the Doi Moi, Vietnam's economy grew and developed continuously at a relatively high rate during the past 35 years with an average growth rate of about 7% per year. The scale of GDP is constantly expanding, reaching US$343.6 billion in 2020, becoming the fourth largest economy in ASEAN. Per capita income increased about 17 times, to US$3,512; Vietnam moved out of the group of low-income countries in 2008. The poverty rate decreased by 1.5% per year; from 58% in 1993 to 5.8% in 2016. More than 97 million people in Vietnam, including 54 ethnic groups, of which more than 60% of the population live in rural areas. Economic development has helped the country get out of the socio-economic crisis in the 1980s and significantly improve people's living standards.

That great achievement of historical significance stems from the close relationship between the Party and the people. In the article, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong emphasised that besides determining the right policy and direction, ensuring the leadership role of the Party, it is necessary to strongly promote the people's role of creativity, support and their participation in the Party’s leadership. People’s strength is the profound source of victory and development.

As a neighbour with a time-honoured friendship, solidarity and cooperation with Vietnam, Cambodia is very pleased to witness the great achievements that the Vietnamese people have been achieving. It is believed that under the sound leadership of the CPV, with the foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, peace, cooperation and development, multilateralisation and diversification of international relations, on the basis of respect for independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, non-interference in each other's internal affairs, equality and mutual benefit, the Vietnamese people will quickly achieve the goal of building socialism in Vietnam with a society of wealthy people, strong country, democracy, justice and civilisation.
