This is the fifth time Vietnam has been elected to be a member of the UNESCO Executive Board. Vietnam was a member of the UNESCO Executive Board for the 1978-1983, 2001-2005, 2009-2013 and 2015-2019 terms.

The UNESCO Executive Board consists of 58 members, is an important executive body of UNESCO, responsible for developing short-term, medium-term programmes and plans and budgets of the organisation, as well as voting on the candidate for the Director General of UNESCO to be approved by the UNESCO General Assembly.

Immediately after the voting results were announced, many delegations from other countries came to congratulate the Vietnamese delegation on being elected to the UNESCO Executive Board for the new term.

Secretary-General of the Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO Mai Phan Dung

Secretary-General of the Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO Mai Phan Dung, who led the Vietnamese delegation attending the 41st session, said that Vietnam becoming a member of the Executive Board at this time demonstrates the country’s rising position and prestige in the international arena as well as the recognition of the international community for its contributions to relations with UNESCO.

This is the result of Vietnam’s policy of multilateralism, diversification and comprehensive and extensive international integration, as well as the outcome of the concerted implementation of the election campaign in the past years, he continued.

Ambassador Le Thi Hong Van, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to UNESCO

Vietnam’s membership in the UNESCO Executive Board offers good opportunities for Vietnam to show ‘dual responsibility’ in protecting national interests, capitalising on UNESCO’s ideas and initiatives to serve the national construction and development in a sustainable, concerted and comprehensive manner.

Meanwhile, Ambassador Le Thi Hong Van, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to UNESCO, noted that the voting results show the high confidence of international friends in Vietnam’s prestige and contributions to the international community in recent years at the global multilateral level.

Vietnam's position, prestige and contributions, as demonstrated in its role as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in promoting multilateral cooperation, are factors which show that Vietnam is a reliable and responsible member, contributing to the common work of the international community, she added.
