Japanese Envoy Jun Yanagi: Belief in Vietnam’s development
Jun Yanagi visited Hanoi for the first time in 1994 when he accompanied Japanese Prime Minister Tomiichi Murayama during a Vietnam visit. Returning to the country after 20 years as a diplomat, he was deeply impressed by Vietnam’s development and unchanged characters of Vietnamese people. He said that Japan values Vietnam’s role in contributing to regional stability and preserving unity, as well as its central role in ASEAN, adding that Japan has been proud to make contributions to Vietnam’s prosperity and development for the past two decades and will continue coordinating with the country in developing the infrastructure, supporting people and transferring technology.

Vietnam’s history comprises both war and peace. History cannot be changed but it should be emphasised that the Vietnam-France Friendship Association was established in Hanoi one year after the Dien Bien Phu Victory (1954) and the two countries recently celebrated the association’s 50th anniversary. The association’s establishment is impressive, reflecting Vietnam’s efforts in seeking peace and developing friendships with other countries.
Vietnam has made strong steps forwards, reforming the country and integrating into the world. It is not only a pillar of peace, but also a place of stability in the region. French investors said that peace and stability are the main reasons for their investment in the country. Vietnam’s dialogue policy on resolving disputes and tensions with neighbouring countries is lauded all over the world.

At the recent conference in Hanoi themed “70 Years of Vietnam’s Diplomacy: The Way Forward”, many participants agreed that Vietnam has made notable progress in international integration. Vietnam’s diplomacy has always respected international laws and the interests of itself and partners, contributing to maintaining peace and stability in the region and the world. The consistent commitment to this principle is a basis for friends and partners to continue their support to Vietnam in the future.
The US-Vietnam relationship is not dictated by what was, but by what can be. Our two countries have reconciled and that should give us all tremendous hope for the future. I believe that Vietnam will play an increasingly important role in regional and international diplomacy. For Vietnam, the way ahead is clear: successful global integration, increasing prosperity for its citizens and a more responsible role in promoting peace and stability for this region and beyond.
