Ministries assigned tasks regarding election of deputies to NA and People’s Councils

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung recently issued a directive in regards to organising the election of deputies to the 14th National Assembly and People’s Councils at all levels for the 2016-2021 tenure.

Accordingly, the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) was asked to instruct news agencies and press, from central to grassroots levels, to produce timely reports on the significance of the election, citizens’ rights to nominate and self-nominate as stipulated by the Constitution; and basic principles of the Law on Organisation of the NA, Law on Local Government Organisation, and the Law on Election of Deputies to the NA and People’s Councils, among officials, public servants, armed forces and all classes of people.

The Ministry of Planning and Investment was tasked with directing the General Statistics Office of Vietnam to guide local statistics departments to provide population figures of each locality up to December 31, 2015, based on which the number of NA deputies and all-level People’s Council deputies will be calculated in each administrative unit.

The PM assigned the Transport Ministry and the MIC to work out specific measures in order to ensure traffic and communication be uninterrupted during preparations and organisation of the election, especially on Election Day, May 22.

The Defence Ministry and the Ministry of Public Security were requested to ensure political security and social order and safety during preparations and organisation of the election. The Government Inspectorate was asked to work with relevant agencies to guide asset declaration for the nominees for NA deputies and all-level People’s Council deputies, and focus on handling citizens’ complaints and denunciations before, during and after the election.

The Ministry of Home Affairs is the permanent agency responsible to the government in instructing all-level People’s Committees to organise the election of deputies to the NA and all-level People’s Councils in line with the Politburo’s direction and the National Electoral Council’s plans, ensure preparation progress for the election as well as follow sequences of procedures before, during and after the election. The ministry was also asked to coordinate with standing bodies of People’s Councils and relevant agencies to supervise, inspect and organise the election process.
