The annual event, hosted by the Vietnam Lawyers’ Association (VLA), chalked out ways to facilitate the legal environment of the ASEAN Community. It also discussed the draft protocol on the harmonisation of commercial laws, and exchanged practices in implementing international arbitration decisions.

Speaking at the meeting, VLA President Nguyen Van Quyen, who is also Chairman of ALA Vietnam, said with the ASEAN Community officially formed last year, the ALA Governing Council should work to promote a common legal system in the region and develop ASEAN as a region of sustainability, prosperity and security.

The meeting approved the resolution on the harmonised regulatory framework for liberalisation of legal services within the ASEAN Community.

Established in 1979, the ALA is a non-governmental organisation, bringing together all the different branches of the law profession in Southeast Asia.

The 39th ALA Governing Council Meeting is slated to take place in Manila, the Philippines next year.
