Sri Lankan Parliament Speaker begins official visit to Vietnam

Speaker of the Sri Lankan Parliament, Karu Jayasuriya, has arrived in Hanoi, beginning his official visit to Vietnam from April 23 to 27, at the invitation of Chairwoman of the National Assembly, Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan.

His entourage includes Senevirathne Bandara Nawinne, a member of the Parliament and Minister of Internal Affairs, Cultural Affairs and Wayamba Development; some members of the Sri Lankan Parliament; and Sri Lankan Ambassador to Vietnam, S.H.U. Dissnayake.

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya was born on September 29, 1940 and graduated from Ananda College in Colombo. In 1995, he served as the chairman of the United National Party (UNP). He was the Mayor of Colombo from 1997 to 1999, Minister of Power and Energy from 2001 to 2004, Minister of Public Administration and Home Affairs from 2007 to 2008, and Minister of Buddha Sasana, Public Administration, Local Government and Democratic Governance in 2015.

Jayasuriya has been serving as the Speaker of the Sri Lankan Parliament since September 2015.
