The Vietnamese Government official met with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, Deputy National Security Advisor Mira Ricardel and Senator Mazie Hirono.
At the meeting with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan, Deputy PM Hue said that Vietnam attached great importance to and stands ready to promote the Vietnam-US comprehensive partnership in the interests of both peoples and for peace, stability and development in the region and the world.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo affirmed that the US valued the friendship and comprehensive partnership with Vietnam and agreed with the Vietnamese Deputy PM that the two sides should promote their bilateral relations based on agreed principles.
The two sides also exchanged measures to boost the comprehensive partnership and agreed to increase the exchange of high-ranking delegations while fostering trade, investment and cooperation in energy, defence-security and remedies for war consequences.
Vietnam welcomed the outcomes of the summit between the US and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on June 12 and stands ready to cooperate and support all constructive efforts to solve disagreements through dialogue, contributing positively to the peace, security and stability of the Korean peninsula.
At the meeting with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, Deputy PM Hue said that Vietnam appreciated its economic-financial cooperation opportunities with the US, noting that his visit aims to realise commitments reached during the visit to the US by PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc in May 2017 and the visit to Vietnam by President Donald Trump in November 2017.
Notably, the Deputy PM suggested that the US Department of the Treasury establish a dialogue channel with the Vietnamese Ministry of Finance and relevant ministries and sectors so that the department will have access to sufficient information when it assesses bilateral trade ties and Vietnam’s exchange rate policy.
The US department was also asked to finalise procedures for ratifying the bilateral agreement on the avoidance of double taxation and the prevention of tax evasion with respect to taxes on income. It was also asked to resume ODA and preferential loans for Vietnam and increase direct and indirect aid programmes through non-governmental organisations to carry out humanitarian and development assistance projects in Vietnam.
Treasury Secretary Mnuchin said there remains much room for the two countries to boost trade and investment, noting that he hopes to visit Vietnam soon to promote these cooperation opportunities and to turn the US into a leading trade and investment partner of Vietnam.
While meeting with Deputy National Security Advisor Mira Ricardel, Deputy PM Hue said that Vietnam welcomes the US to continue playing an active role in helping to maintain peace, stability, cooperation and development in the Indo-Asia-Pacific and the world.
He stressed that a strong and independent Vietnam with continued reform, successful integration into the world and a role of growing importance in ASEAN and the region will be useful for the US to realise its policies for the region.
Ricardel said the US respects international law, security and safety of navigation and overflight over the East Sea and supports the peaceful settlement of disputes. The US also appreciates Vietnam’s support for President Trump’s efforts in the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula.
At the talks with Senator Mazie Hirono, Ranking Member of the Senate Armed Services Subcommittee on Seapower, Deputy PM Hue valued the US Congresswoman’s role in promoting the countries’ relations, hoping that it would continue helping Vietnam to address war consequences and reinforce trade ties.
Hirono said that Vietnam plays an important role in the US policies toward the Asia-Pacific region and supports stronger bilateral relations in all areas, particularly in economy-trade, war consequences settlement, parliamentary cooperation, and coordination to contribute to peace, stability, cooperation and development in the world, including the freedom, security and safety of navigation and aviation and the peaceful settlement of disputes in the East Sea.
