General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong elected Vietnamese President

General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has been sworn in as President of Vietnam after being elected by the National Assembly on October 23.

At the swearing-in ceremony, President Nguyen Phu Trong pledged his absolute loyalty to the Fatherland, people and constitution.

With his left hand on the constitution, he also promised to try his utmost to fulfill the tasks entrusted to him by the Party, State and people.

In a remark after being elected President, the General Secretary stated that it is a great honour but also a heavy responsibility.

President Nguyen Phu Trong was born in 1944 in Dong Anh district on the outskirts in Hanoi. He is currently General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam.

Prior to becoming the Party chief in 2011, he held numerous important posts including Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee and Chairman of the National Assembly.
