The inauguration ceremony was jointly held by the High Command of Military Region 5 of the Vietnam People’s Army and the High Command of Military Region 1 of the Royal Cambodian Army.
The Front 579 was stationed by the Military Region 5 of Vietnam which has mountainous and harsh terrain, particularly the mountainous areas in the shared border with Thailand.
It is estimated that more than 10,000 officials and soldiers of the Military Region 5 laid down their lives or were injured during the 10-year fight to help Cambodia to escape from the genocidal regime.
The Front 579 memorial site showcases nearly 100 pictures and artifacts associated with the years of hardship and sacrifices that Vietnamese soldiers underwent to protect the long-term peace for the Cambodian people.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, General Huot Chhieng, Commander of the Military Region 1 of the Royal Cambodian Army, recalled the great sacrifice of the Vietnamese army during the ten years of fighting against Pol Pot forces, particularly in the struggles in the Preah Vihear province along the Cambodia-Thailand border.
He noted that the Cambodian people and army always bear in mind the sacrifice of Vietnamese soldiers as well as their relatives to help Cambodia escape from the genocidal regime.
