Nepalese PM visits Vietnam and attends UN Vesak Day

At the invitation of Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Nepalese Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, his spouse and a high-ranking delegation will pay an official visit to Vietnam from May 9-13and will attend the UN Day of Vesak.

His entourage includes Foreign Minister Pradeep Kumar Gyawali, Advisor to the PM Bishnu Prasad Rimal, Foreign Affairs Advisor Rajan Bhattarai, Bangladeshi Ambassador in Bangkok Khaganath Adhikari and a number of other high-ranking officials.

Nepalese PM KP Sharma Oli was born on February 23, 1952, in Terathum, in eastern Nepal, and studied at the Himalaya Higher Secondary School.

He joined the Communist Party of Nepal (CPN) in February 1970 and became head of the organising committee of the Jhapa Movement in 1972. He was imprisoned from 1973 to 1987.

After his release, he became a member of the central committee of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist) (CPN-UML) and was in charge of the Lumbini Zone until 1990.

In 1990, he was the founding chairman of the National Democratic Youth Organisation. In 1991, he was the leader of the CPN-UML and a member of parliament.

He held various positions before becoming Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister from April 2006 to March 2007. He was named Chairman of the CPN-UML in July 2014.

From October 2015 to July 2016 and again from February until the present KP Sharma Oli has held the role of Prime Minister of Nepal.
