Can Tho city urged to promote sustainable development

The southern city of Can Tho should focus on a rapid, firm and sustainable development while addressing effectively the social issues related to environmental protection, urban management and planning, land management, new rural area construction, social order and security.

National Assembly (NA) Vice Chairman Uong Chu Luu made the statement while attending the 13th session of the 14th People's Council of Can Tho city on July 10.

Speaking at the working session, the Deputy PM emphasised that Can Tho is a bright spot in the Mekong River Delta region in the fields of trade and services.

Can Tho should continue to pay due attention to solving problems arising in development, implement industrialisation and urbanisation, developing infrastructure, and enhancing human resources for industrialisation.

The city should also focus on promoting its own potential and the general strengths of the southern key city, while improving its economic efficiency, labour productivity, water resources, human resources and culture, he noted.

According to the report delivered by the Can Tho City People's Committee, in the first six months of 2019, the city recorded a gross regional domestic product (GRDP) growth rate of 6.31%. Export revenue reached over US$1.12 billion, meeting nearly 51% of the yearly plan, up 7.5% over the same period last year.

The total state budget revenue is estimated at nearly VND 9.6 trillion, reaching 65.5% of the plan assigned by the City People's Council, a year-on-year increase of 15.6%.
