NDO - Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Quoc Dung has hosted a briefing on Vietnam’s ASEAN chairmanship in 2020 with the attendance of nearly 70 ambassadors, chargé d'affaires and representatives of the embassies of ASEAN countries and ASEAN’s development partners in Hanoi.

The Vietnamese official said that ASEAN is always one of Vietnam’s top priorities in foreign policy and that the country will do its utmost to successfully fulfil its role as ASEAN chair next year.

Underlining the theme “Cohesive and Responsive” for 2020, Deputy Minister Dung stated that Vietnam wishes to build an increasingly strongly connected ASEAN Community that can stand firm against regional and global impacts.

He shared the five priorities to be promoted by Vietnam during its ASEAN chairmanship, including the strengthening of ASEAN unity and solidarity, intensifying ASEAN’s economic integration and connectivity, promoting ASEAN identity and awareness, enhancing ASEAN’s global partnership for peace, stability and sustainable development, and increasing ASEAN’s institutional capacity and effectiveness.

These priorities are built upon the results produced by previous ASEAN Chairs, such that they meet the requirements for the process of building an ASEAN Community, Dung said.

At the briefing, foreign diplomats were also informed of the cooperation orientations and priorities proposed by Vietnam within the ASEAN Economic Community and the ASEAN Socio-cultural Community.
