The monument was rebuilt at the base of the old monument, which was first constructed in the centre of Kampong Speu in the 1980s.
This is the 20th out of 22 monuments rebuilt or upgraded across Cambodia in recognition of the great contributions of Vietnamese and Cambodian soldiers who sacrificed their lives to liberate Cambodia from the genocidal Pol Pot regime.
The groundbreaking ceremony saw the presence of Secretary of State at the Cambodia Ministry of Cults and Religion and Standing Vice Chairman cum Secretary General of the Solidarity Front for the Development of Cambodian Motherland Nhem Valy and Vietnamese military attaché Nguyen Thanh Chinh, among other local officials.
Addressing the event, Standing Vice Chairman and Secretary General of the Solidarity Front for the Development of Cambodian Motherland Nhem Valy said that after the victory in 1979, Cambodia was liberated and provinces across the country built Vietnam-Cambodia Friendship Monuments.
He said that the Cambodia’s escape from the genocidal Pol Pot regime was thanks to Vietnamese volunteers and soldiers, adding that Cambodian people are always grateful to the Vietnamese people for their sacrifice for Cambodia.
The construction of the new monument is scheduled for completion in 12 months.
