The Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc’s attendance at the ASEAN Summit aims to tighten the spirit of solidarity in ASEAN, promote the central role of the Association, expand and deepen relations with partners of ASEAN, create a favorable environment for the sustainable development of each nation and the region. This trip also contributes to improving the image of Vietnam continuing to innovate, actively and responsibly participate in regional cooperation contents, thereby effectively protecting the legitimate interests of Vietnam.

On December 31, 2015 marked a milestone in the process of formation and development of ASEAN with the birth of the ASEAN Community, opening a new stage of development for the Association. ASEAN is entering the midterm phase of implementing the ASEAN Community Vision 2025, with many encouraging results, helping to bring the ASEAN Community to become a pillar of regional peace, stability and development step by step,. However, the Association still faces many challenges from both inside and outside.

Under the theme of “Advancing Partnership for Sustainability”, ASEAN focuses on promoting sustainability across all three pillar communities, including: the ASEAN Political-Security Community (APSC), the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) and ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC); at the same time, expanding relationships with partners towards sustainable development. Thailand, while performing the role of ASEAN Chair in 2019 has been actively implementing the sustainable comprehensive initiative, which highlights building the ASEAN leaders’ vision on promoting partnerships for sustainability; establishing centres for sustainable development, social welfare, active and creative old age; determining 2019 as ASEAN Cultural Year.

The 34th ASEAN Summit takes place in Thailand in the context where the world and region have continued to have changes in politics, economics and social affairs. The world economy is still growing but the pace has slowed down due to the impact of trade conflicts, global public debt, and increased unemployment. The Asia-Pacific region is essentially stable, but there are potential uncertainties. In this situation, ASEAN has proactively built its views on cooperation in the Indian Ocean - Asia Pacific region, showing a proactive approach and affirming its central role in shaping the regional structure. At the 34th ASEAN Summit, ASEAN leaders will focus on discussing the implementation of cooperation in the spirit of the theme and priority in 2019; continuing to promote economic linkages, expand relations between ASEAN and its partners to cope with challenges such as climate change, terrorism and high-tech crime; and reinforce ASEAN's central and leading role in regional structure. The conference also discussed regional and international issues of mutual concern.

Since joining ASEAN in 1995, Vietnam has fully and deeply participated in cooperation in the fields of politics, security, economy, culture, society and foreign relations; strictly implementing commitments and agreements, contributing to realising the construction of the ASEAN Community. Vietnam is proud to be an important part of ASEAN's history of development, always showing its goodwill and effort, actively contributing to the overall achievement of the Association; always together with member countries to promote ASEAN's spirit of solidarity, unity and raising a sense of common responsibility with the aim to respond to threatened peace, security and stability in the region.

The Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc’s attendance at the ASEAN Summit in Thailand aims to help further strengthen links within ASEAN, enhance ASEAN's solidarity, unity and central role in the complex developments of the current situation, and expand and deepen ASEAN's relations with its partners. The trip represents Vietnam's support for Thailand in performing the role of ASEAN Chair in 2019; affirming the image and prestige of Vietnam - a member always active, positive, responsible, closely and wholeheartedly for ASEAN, towards building a region of peace, stability, cooperation and development.
