NDO - The Vietnam Administration of Seas and Islands (VASI) and China’s Third Institute of Oceanography (TIO) held a virtual seminar on September 14 to share experience in marine environment management in the Gulf of Tonkin.

The event took place as part of a joint research project between the two countries on the management of the marine environment and ecosystems in the Gulf of Tonkin, conducted from 2019 to 2021.

At the workshop, Vietnamese and Chinese representatives presented papers on the surveying and analysis results, analyses on the environment and ecosystems for building a shared database, assessment of marine environmental pollution risks, and measures to reduce pollution and control pollution risks in the Gulf of Tonkin.

The two sides will continue working together to reach consensus on the data structure in the shared database, and exchange technical requirements on the marine ecological surveying and monitoring applied by the two sides.

The Chinese and Vietnamese agencies also agreed on contents of cooperation for the future, including research on radioactivity in seawater and seabed sediment, microplastics pollution, and storm surges in the Gulf of Tonkin, among others.
