NDO – A solid waste treatment plant was put into operation on Ly Son district Island in Quang Ngai province on June 4, making it the first to be installed on the island.

The plant went through a trial run in January this year.

Covering a total area of two hectares in An Vinh and An Hai communes, the plant was built at a cost of VND 30 billion invested by the Vietnam Environment Administration.

With an average capacity of 15 tonnes per day, it can handle a remarkable volume of waste.

It is estimated that dozens of tonnes of daily waste are discharged into the sea by Ly Son islanders every day, causing serious pollution to the environment.

The operation of the plant is expected to change locals’ littering habit, improve their living environment, and protect coral reefs and seaweed, which are facing high levels of pollution.
