The event was jointly held by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the Soc Trang provincial People’s Committee and the German Agency for International Co-operation (GIZ).

At the ceremony, Deputy Director of the Vietnam Administration of Sea and Islands Vu Sy Tuan announced Decision 2295/QD-TTg signed by the Prime Minister on December 17, 2014 on approving the VSICZM.

Accordingly, the scope of the strategy will be expanded to 28 coastal cities and provinces across the country in a new management method.

The main objective of the strategy is to extract and rationally use natural resources and to protect the environment in the coastal region as well as meet the needs of sustainable socio-economic development.

The strategy was built based on respecting the laws of nature, encouraging economic development consistent with the characteristics of each region, actively responding to climate change, clearly defining responsibilities of relevant ministries, branches and localities, and promoting the role of community, social organisations and international co-operation.
