Southeast Asian geological and energy congress held in Hanoi

The 15th Regional Congress on Geology, Mineral and Energy Resources of Southeast Asia (GEOSEA 15) officially opened in Hanoi on October 16.

The event was attended by former President, Tran Duc Luong, and featured the participation of over 500 scientists and managers from the ASEAN members and developed countries such as the US, the UK, Germany, Russia, Japan, Denmark, Canada and China.

During the two-day congress, discussions focused on the latest achievements in basic geological surveys, the exploration and exploitation of natural resources of the earth and forecasting and mitigating the impact of geological hazards in the context of climate change.

The delegates also introduced the scientific basis and proposed the building of appropriate policies related to the management of mineral resources and energy towards sustainable development.

Speaking at the event, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Tran Hong Ha, said that with the diversification of geology, mineral resources and renewable energy sources, Vietnam is willing to implement cooperation projects in this field with international organisations, countries and scientists.

The inaugural GEOSEA was held at the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in 1972. Vietnam joined the GEOSEA in 1978.
