The bear was voluntarily transferred to the rescue team by its owner on October 15, under the advocacy of the Hanoi Forest Protection Department, with the expectation that it would have a better life.
The owner has raised the bear since he was a cub in 2002. It has been named Uno by Animals Asia.
Currently, Hanoi still has about 170 bears kept in private farms, most of them in Phuc Tho.
Animals Asia has collaborated with the Hanoi Forest Protection Department, local authorities and schools in the area to propagate on bear protection for many years, and Uno is one among the first in Hanoi being transferred by private farms to the Vietnam Bear Rescue Centre for humanitarian purposes.
The rescue went smoothly despite the stormy weather under the companionship of the Hanoi Forest Protection Department and the Dan Phuong District Forest Protection Department, as well as with the support from the bear owner's family.

According to statistics, in Phuc Tho district, there are still about 140 bears in captivity in nearly 20 farms, accounting for a quarter of bears being kept in farms across the country.
So far, Animals Asia has successfully rescued 220 bears in many provinces across Vietnam. Currently, 188 are receiving medical care and nutrition and living in semi-wild areas at the rescue centre in Tam Dao.
Earlier on October 13, Education for Nature Vietnam announced that the NGO had rescued a bear in Ninh Giang district, Hai Duong province after more than 15 years in captivity. It was transferred to the Ninh Binh Bear Sanctuary in Ninh Binh province, following the rescue of two others in Lam Dong province on October 2.
