Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Tran Hong Ha (R) and Ambassador of the ROK to Vietnam Park Noh-wan sign the Cooperative Framework Agreement on Climate Change.

The signing of the cooperation framework agreement between the Governments of the two countries took place in the context of the ROK hosting the Partnering for Green Growth and the Global Goals 2030 (P4G) Summit and the P4G Green Future Week. At the same time, the two countries are also preparing to attend the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference which will take place in the UK in November.

At the signing ceremony held on May 31, Minister Tran Hong Ha and Ambassador Park Noh-wan said that Vietnam and the ROK have cooperated in many fields in recent years, such as hydrometeorology, environment, and water resources. The signing of the framework agreement will deepen the cooperative relationship and enrich the form of partnership between the Governments and peoples of Vietnam and the ROK.

The framework agreement will act as the legal basis for agencies and organisations of the two countries to carry out cooperative activities on responding to climate change in the coming time, contributing to promoting the exchange of expertise and knowledge, including the transfer and adoption of technologies on climate change adaptation and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction in the two countries. At the same time, relevant agencies must also contribute to the global joint effort to respond to the climate emergency for the sake of sustainable development.

Minister Tran Hong Ha said that the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE) will coordinate with Vietnamese ministries, branches and partner agencies of the ROK to effectively implement the framework agreement, proposing cooperation activities that meet the practical requirements and priorities of the two countries.

The Minister expressed his hope that Ambassador Park Noh-wan will be a bridge for the Vietnam-RoK cooperation relationship to develop further, commensurate with the potential and expectations of the two countries.

The Framework Agreement for Cooperation on climate change between the Vietnam and the ROK aims to strengthen the capacity of the parties to reduce and eliminate GHG emissions and adapt to the adverse effects of change climate, thereby facilitating the economic transition of the parties towards reducing carbon emissions and being more resilient to climate change.
