NDO – The National Conference on E-government was held in virtual format on August 9 with the theme ‘Solutions to improve the efficiency of online public services, develop digital government in the 2021-2025 period, and develop smart cities and e-commerce for the growth of the digital economy’.

The event was co-organised by IDG Vietnam Company and the Vietnam Digital Communication Media Association under the sponsorship of the Government Office and the Ministry of Information and Communications.

Vietnam climbed two positions to number 86 amongst 193 countries in the United Nations’ e-government development index (EDGI) rankings. In Southeast Asia, Vietnam ranks 6th behind Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Brunei and the Philippines.

In June this year, the Government issued an e-government development strategy towards further digital government in the 2021-2025 period, with a vision to 2030, setting out key goals and tasks to foster digital government in the country.

According to experts, Vietnam should further enhance its efficiency in E-Government in order to raise its competitiveness in the region while paying greater attention to fields such as smart cities and e-commerce, which can help to facilitate economic recovery in the post-COVID-19 period.

Meanwhile, 38 out of 63 provinces/cities in Vietnam are pursuing smart city projects by actively investing in digital infrastructure and pushing for full 4G coverage, which helps improve people’s access to IT services.

Regarding the building of smart cities, 38 out of 63 cities and provinces nationwide have implemented smart urban construction projects. Regarding e-commerce, the size of Vietnam’s internet economy in 2020 was US$14 billion, up 16% year on year, and will likely reach US$52 billion in value by 2025.
