Storm Kompasu weakens into depression

Storm Kompasu, the eighth hitting the East Sea/South China Sea so far this year, entered the Gulf of Tonkin on October 13 night and weakened in intensity, according to the National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting.

At 4am on October 14, the location of the storm was around 18.8 degrees north latitude and 107.8 degrees east longitude, packing 60-75 kilometres per hour winds (level 8), shocked at level 11.

In the next 12 hours, the storm will move west at a speed of 20-25 kilometres and weakened into a tropical depression.

At 4pm on October 14, the location of the tropical depression will be around 19.0 degrees north latitude and 105.8 degrees east longitude, right on the coastal waters from Nam Dinh to Ha Tinh.

The strongest winds in the area near the centre of depression are expected to be about 50-60 kilometres per hour (level 7), shock at level 9.

In the next 12-24 hours, the tropical depression will move quickly west-southwest, at a speed of 20-25 kilometres per hour, travel inland from Thanh Hoa to Quang Binhprovinces and weaken into a low pressure area in central Laos. The strongest wind in the centre of the low pressure area dropped below level 6 (40 kilometres per hour).

The danger zone on the East Sea in the next 24 will be at 17.0 degrees north latitude, 111.0 degrees east longitude. All vessels operating in the danger zone are at high risk of being affected by strong winds, high waves and tornadoes.
