The remark was made by Deputy Director General of Administration of Forestry Nguyen Ba Ngai at a press conference held on June 24 to announce Vietnam’s accession to the organisation.

He stressed that membership would not only bring huge benefits to the country’s forestry sector, but that it is also a vivid illustration of the country’s readiness to co-operate with other countries in the region and around the world in managing tropical timber and boosting timber trading in a responsible way.

Speaking at the conference, ITTO Assistant Director Collins Ahadome affirmed the ITTO Secretariat's support for Vietnam in the approval for its capacity-building projects so that the country could actively and positively participate in the ITTO and strictly implement its member state rights and obligations.

The ITTO is an intergovernmental organisation established in 1986 under the sponsorship of the United Nations. Its members represent about 80% of the world's tropical forests and 90% of the global tropical timber trade.
