Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Manh Hung said 5G will be the most important part of the infrastructure for the digital economy thanks to its greater bandwidth, higher speeds and lower latency.

He stated that the digital economy is creating new opportunities, noting that new technologies will enable better connectivity between supply chains, and reduce logistics and business costs.

According to the minister, Vietnam will be one of the first countries in the world to roll out 5G.

Speaking at the ASEAN Conference on 5G, Hung said his ministry had already licensed local carriers to test the technology in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, adding that Vietnam is focusing on developing 5G-based technologies and equipment.

He said that Vietnam is willing to cooperate with the ASEAN countries to establish joint ventures and factories to make IT equipment.

The ASEAN Conference on 5G takes place on March 21 and 22 in Hanoi, during which regional regulators and experts will discuss 5G development policies and strategies, as well as challenges in building a 5G-based ecosystem.
