The event was jointly held by the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC), the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) and the government of Ho Chi Minh City.

In his opening remarks, MIC Deputy Minister Phan Tam highlighted the role of information and communications technology (ICT) as the core of a digital economy.

He added that the importance of the ICT industry has been established through various policies, with the most recent being the national digital transformation programme until 2025 with a view to 2030 approved in June.

According to experts, in order to develop the domestic ICT industry, it is necessary to work towards a self-reliant industry by developing digital technology firms that can master the design and creation of services and products.

At the event, Bui Thi Thanh An, from the MOIT’s Trade Promotion Department, gave a briefing on the Vietnam Value 2020 programme which will honour enterprises in various sectors, with many in the field of digital technology.

Last year Vietnam’s ICT industry brought in revenue of over US$112 billion, with exports up by 10% to US$91.5 billion. The sector has become a major contributor to gross domestic product, estimated at 7.3% in 2020, with the figure even as high as 16% if foreign-invested companies are counted.
