The government’s top leader made the request while working with the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations (VUSTA), the socio-political organisation gathering Vietnam’s scientific and technological intelligentsia.

As reported by VUSTA President Dang Vu Minh, with 15 member associations in its inception, the organisation now has 141 member associations, plus over 430 semi-autonomous organisations and 101 press agencies, amounting to over 2.8 million members, including more than 1.5 million intellectuals.

Speaking at the meeting, PM Phuc said the intelligentsia is the core force for the creation and diffusion of knowledge, adding that VUSTA, with its abundance of intellectuals, has an increasingly important significance for the development of the nation.

For the development of a transparent and active government that is dedicated to serving the people, opinions and suggestions from scientists and the people are needed, in addition to close cooperation between the State administration and the role of associations, especially VUSTA, the leader affirmed.

Praising the intelligentsia and scientists’ efforts in developing solutions directly contributing to national socio-economic development, PM Phuc urged VUSTA to continue to do better in gathering intellectuals at home and abroad to advise the Party and State on important guidelines and policies for socio-economic development at both national and local levels.

He suggested that the union should create a favourable environment in which for intellectuals to take the lead in spreading and disseminating the essence of human knowledge to contribute to improving people’s knowledge and the effective application of scientific advances into production and daily life, while removing difficulties and obstacles hindering the development of science and technology and participating in monitoring scientific and technological research.

PM Phuc also asked for focusing on the training of the intelligentsia, especially preferential policies for talent and scientific and technological activities, thus helping young scientists to make breakthroughs in their work, arousing their passion for science and technology.

Saying that much scientific and technological equipment such as submarines and aircraft have been created by enterprises, farmers and students, the PM urged VUSTA to promote to the maximum creative capacity and participation in scientific research of the business community and citizenry.

VUSTA should closely collaborate with related ministries and agencies, especially the Ministry of Science and Technology, while stepping up international cooperation to keep abreast of practical needs and develop more practical topics, projects and programmes to effectively serve the country’s socio-economic development.
