IAEA experts attend Vietnam conference on nuclear science and technology

Almost 400 Vietnamese and foreign scientists and experts, in the area of nuclear energy, participated in the Vietnam Conference on Nuclear Science and Technology (VINANST-12), which opened in Nha Trang, on August 2.

The participants come from over 70 organisations and agencies, including the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and are from many countries with advanced nuclear science and technology including Russia, Japan, the US, the UK, France, the Netherlands, and India, among others.

As many as 235 reports are scheduled to be presented at the three-day conference, in particular a seminar on applying nuclear technologies in industry, agriculture and health will be held, with six reports presented by experts from the IAEA, the Czech Republic and Vietnam.

Tran Chi Thanh, President of the Vietnam Atomic Energy Institute said that the application of atomic energy has been formed and developed in Vietnam over the past 40 years, contributing significantly to national socio-economic development.

The research and application of atomic energy is currently being promoted in Vietnam, Thanh noted.

He added that Vietnam's atomic energy sector is focusing on preparing human and other resources and for the building of a nuclear science and technology centre and a capacity building for the development of nuclear electricity in the future, along with promoting the application of nuclear energy in various areas.

Nguyen Duy Bac, Vice Chairman of Khanh Hoa provincial People's Committee said that several agencies in Khanh Hoa are carrying out research on the application of atomic energy and the use of radioactivity source and radiation equipment, including the province's General Hospital, Nha Trang University and the Institute of Oceanography.

The conference is an important scientific event for Vietnam to boost the research and application of atomic energy in various sectors, for peaceful purposes.

The VINANST-12 is jointly held by the Vietnam Atomic Energy Society, Vietnam Atomic Energy Institute and Khanh Hoa provincial Department of Science and Technology. The biennial conference was first held in 1996.
