NDO - The "Vietnamese Seeds Fund" developed by Nhan Dan (People) newspaper will present 1,300 scholarships to needy students who have achieved good academic results in the Mekong Delta region, said Nguyen Hong Sam, head of the Nhan Dan representative office in Can Tho, at a press brief on August 13.

The 1,300 scholarships worth VND3 million each have a total value of VND3.9 billion (US$167,700) and will be granted to students in 13 provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta region with each locality allocated 100 scholarships.

The total value of the scholarships is funded by the Lien Viet Post JSC Commercial Bank, Sam said.

The scholarship presentation ceremony will be held on the evening of August 18 at the meeting-hall of Can Tho University in Can Tho and broadcast live on Nhan Dan TV and Vinh Long TV.

The "Vietnamese Seeds Fund" was first set up in 2012 by Nhan Dan newspaper with the aim of promoting a learning society movement and the training of younger generations across the country.

Sam noted that this is the first time that the fund will present scholarships to students on a large scale in the Southwest region, which will provide a solid foundation for further activities in the future.

Journalist Phan Huy, former head of the Nhan Dan representative office in Can Tho, expressed his belief that the scholarships would be a source of encouragement for students of needy households to overcome their difficulties in order to pursue their studies.
