On January 2, Health Minister Nguyen Thi Kim Tien visited a patient who just underwent lung transplantation with an organ donated by Quy, 43, at Hanoi-based Viet Duc Friendship Hospital.

On this occasion, the minister presented the Certificate of Merit to Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, praising its success in performing the multi-organ transplants to save six patients with seven organs donated by the Ninh Binh native on December 12, 2018.

The donor was also posthumously conferred with the “For People's Health” Medal.

On December 12 last year, Viet Duc Hospital set a record for a multi-organ transplantation in Vietnam, taking six organs from the same brain death donor at the same time to carry out a multi-organ transplant.

This is also the first time that Viet Duc has successfully carried out two lung transplantations from a brain death donor, with the whole surgical crew all being from that hospital.

For the first time in Vietnam, the hospital has performed five transplants at the same time for four patients (one heart, two lungs, one liver and one kidney), while jointly coordinating a trans-nation transplant with one kidney sent to Ho Chi Minh City for a child patient.

Health Minister Tien expressed her deep gratitude to the donor and his family for the donation, which shows a noble sharing spirit to save lives of others in need.

The minister also congratulated the medical staff at Viet Duc Hospital for the success of multi-organ transplantation, marking the milestone in the Vietnam medical sector striving to master high technologies.

Prof., Dr. Tran Binh Giang, Director of Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, stated that in 2018, the facility established a tissue bank and has stored over 1,020 autologous skull bones for transplants for 409 cases, along with storing heart valves, blood vessels, sperm, and veins.

Regarding organ transplantation, the hospital has performed 55/105 liver, 25/30 heart and one lung transplant (out of the nation’s total), in addition to coordinating trans-nation transplants for Hue Central Hospital and HCM City-based Cho Ray Hospital.
