>>> Critically ill COVID-19 patient spectacularly recovers

All those discharged this morning were under treatment at the Hanoi-based National Hospital for Tropical Diseases. Among them was Patient 19 – one of the three most severely ill COVID-19 patients in Vietnam and also the most severe patient treated at the hospital so far.

Admitted to the hospital on March 6, the 64-year-old woman has had to rely on invasive mechanical ventilation and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support, as well as suffered from life-threatening cardiac arrests several times, and seemed to unlikely to survive. But now, her health has been stabilised, with seven negative tests for SARS-CoV-2.

Her revival is a miracle as she has at one time seemed to be unable to survive, but thanks to the support of so many machines and the relentless efforts of doctors at the hospital, she was spectacularly revived “from the dead".

From the critical situation, the Hanoian is now healthy and preparing to return to her normal life. “Thank you very much, doctors. I am very grateful that they have saved my life," she told reporters on her discharge.

The remainder of those discharged this morning are Patients 52, 291, 295, 308 and 324, all are Vietnamese.

All the discharged patients will continue to practice home-isolation while under health monitor for the next 14 days.

So far, the total number of recoveries in Vietnam has increased to 278, accounting for 85% of the total confirmed cases. No death has been reported.

Among the remaining 49 patients being treated at health facilities across the nation, five have tested negative for SARS-CoV-2 two or more times, while six others have tested negative once.

Vietnam reported no new COVID-19 cases as of Wednesday morning, marking the 41st consecutive day with no transmission in the community. 187 imported cases were quarantined upon arrival, posing no risk of community transmission.

Right now there are 9,797 people in quarantine across the country, including 55 at hospitals, 7,535 at other quarantine establishments and 2,150 at home.

Regarding Patient 91 – the only remaining severely ill patient in Vietnam – who is being treated at Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, the 43-year-old British pilot is still in critical condition as he is completely dependent on ECMO and suffering from lung infections.

Doctors are providing the British national with intensive care while awaiting a lung transplant as the optimal treatment for him.
