This annual award aims to provide international recognition for those who, at the risk of losing their own life, have performed acts of exceptional bravery, displaying outstanding courage in attempting to save life at sea or in attempting to prevent or mitigate damage to the marine environment.

In 2022, a total of 41 nominations were proposed from 17 member States and 2 IMO non-governmental consulting organisations.

This year, Lieutenant Nguyen Van Hoa was the only individual representing Vietnam to be submitted to the IMO Award for his exceptionally brave actions at sea in 2022.

Previously, Lieutenant Nguyen Van Hoa also received certificates of merit from the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union Central Committee and the Border Guard High Command for his bravery in saving a drowning person.
