The project, which is being implemented by the Centre in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), aims to preserve and protect cultural heritage and identity during the construction of new rural areas.

Within the scope of the project, a Rural Culture Fund is scheduled to be established in the middle of June to mobilise more resources, especially from overseas Vietnamese, and join forces with farmers to build new rural areas that will promote a wealthier economy and richer cultural life.

Initially, the fund will support a number of communes to preserve their tangible and intangible cultural heritage, including such as cheo (traditional opera), tuong (classical drama) and cai luong (southern folk opera), as well as water puppetry and traditional handicrafts and fine arts.

The centre will also co-ordinate with the Van Hien (Literature) Magazine to publish a special issue entitled ‘New Rural Areas’ to communicate experiences in developing new rural cultures.
