This is the first successful procedure of its kind to be carried out by doctors of Hanoi’s health sector without the assistance of foreign experts.

The kidney recipient, from Vu Thu district, Thai Binh province, suffered from kidney failure and was forced to undergo dialysis two times a week.

With the help of doctors from the 103 Hospital, the team of doctors, led by Pham Huy Huyen and Phan Tung Linh, performed the surgery in three hours.

So far, 14 hospitals in Vietnam have successfully performed kidney transplants. A surgery of this kind executed abroad often costs from VND600 million to VND1 billion (US$28,000 – US$47,000), but only VND300 million (US$14,000) in Vietnam.
