The project of making the flags was initiated by Nguyen Thi Dieu Thuy, secretary of the school’s Youth Union, with a hope that it would convey deep sentiments from mainland youths to the islanders.
Her idea received huge support and appreciation from her schoolmates and the school’s management board.
Under the instruction of Nguyen Van Phuc’s family, who have experience in producing national flags for generations, the students were divided into seven groups in charge of different steps in the flag making process.
On the same day, a photo exhibition entitled ‘Hoang Sa, Truong Sa, Vietnam’s Sea and Islands’ opened in Ho Chi Minh City.
Hundreds of the pictures on display in this exhibition were taken by photographer Nguyen A during his field trips to the Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelagos, as well as other islands across the country over the past four years. They reflect the life of the people and soldiers there as well as their efforts to protect Vietnamese sovereignty over its sea and islands.
The exhibition will run until August 16 at the city’s Youth Cultural House, 4 Pham Ngoc Thach Street, District 1.
