Typhoon Kalmaegi weakens into tropical depression

Nhan Dan – Kalmaegi, the third tropical storm to hit this year, has weakened into a tropical depression after making landfall in the northern coastal area last night, the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said.

As of 4am on September 17, the tropical depression was located around 22 degrees north latitude, 105.5 degrees east longitude in the northern midlands region, bringing winds of 50-61kph. In the next 12 hours, it is predicted to move west-northwestward at a speed of 25-30kph.

Torrential rainfall in northeastern provinces has resulted, ranging from 60-110mm, with 114mm in Lang Son, 254mm in Mau Son, 175mm in Co To Island and 134mm in Nam Dinh.

Kalmaegi unroofed houses and knocked down trees and electrical poles in Mong Cai city after sweeping Quang Ninh province last night. Nearly 1,000 ha of rice crops were also inundated.

Hai Phong city mobilised forces of 40,000 people to participate in reinforcing dykes, flood prevention and control, and search and rescue work.

The Border Guard force of the provinces and cities from Quang Ninh to Binh Thuan notified 34,223 vessels with 124,634 fishermen on board to move to safe shelter.

Northern midlands and mountainous localities of Tuyen Quang, Lai Chau, Lang Son, Thai Nguyen, Hoa Binh, Ha Giang, and Phu Tho have established working missions to areas at risk of flooding and landslide, as well as preparing plans to move people out of danger zones.
