The ceremony also attracted thousands of Buddhist monks, nuns and followers as well as local residents and officials.

The Hang Temple, also known by the courtesy name Kim Son Tu, was built under the Ly Dynasty (1009-1225) and was recognised as a national historical and cultural site in 1999 for its distinctive values.

A master plan to overhaul the temple was approved in 2011 with renovation work focused on five main areas, including spiritual halls, caves, meditation and charitable centres.

At the ceremony, Venerable Thich Nguyen Thanh was appointed abbot of the Hang Temple.
