The Deputy Prime Minister Vu Van Ninh made the requirement on January 16 while chairing a meeting of the Committee in Hanoi to assess the work in 2014 and devise orientations and tasks for 2015.

In 2014, the ministries and branches checked 153 documents on the work of poverty reduction, focusing on six issues: education and training, credit, health care, livelihood, housing, legal assistance and infrastructure. Currently, 149 documents are still valid, including 20 amended, supplemented and replaced, and 28 newly issued.

The relevant agencies saw specific positive results in the implementation of poverty reduction policies and programmes, supporting the poor.

Statistics show that the country’s poverty rate fell from 7.8% in 2013 to 5.8-6% in 2014, the proportion of poor households in 64 needy districts saw a decrease from 38.20% in 2013 to 33.20% in 2014.

The Central Steering Committee for Sustainable Poverty Reduction are determined to promote the implementation of sustainable poverty reduction policies and projects, and enhance the accessibility of the beneficiaries.

The Government set a target to decrease the rate of poor households in the country to under 5%, and in needy districts to under 3% in 2015.

The Committee will prioritise the allocation of the budget, government bonds, the Japanese Government's official development assistance (ODA) and credit to develop socio-economic infrastructure in disadvantaged areas and accelerate the implementation of poverty reduction programmes and policies in the 2011-2015 period, especially in ethnic minority communities.

Addressing the meeting, the Deputy PM praised the achievements made by the Committee as well as the relevant ministries and branches in sustainable poverty reduction in 2014.

He also emphasised that the Committee need to overcome current difficulties such as the high rate of poor households in remote areas, the high number of households falling back into poverty, and the overlap of poverty reduction mechanisms and policies.
