Over VND2.4 billion donated to Vung Ang scaffolding collapse victims

More than 2.4 billion (US$110,400) has been handed to families of victims in the scaffolding collapse in the Vung Ang Economic Zone in central Ha Tinh province.

The accident happened on March 25 when more than 40 workers were working on scaffolding at a height of 20-30 metres.

According to initial reports, 14 were killed but officials later confirmed that the death toll from the incident was 13. Meanwhile 28 injured workers are being treated at hospitals in Ha Tinh province and Hanoi.

The support money was donated by construction contractor Samsung C&T, economic zone investor Formosa, the Ha Tinh People’s Committee, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour and other agencies.

At a press briefing on March 27 concerning the incident, a representative of Samsung C&T admitted the company’s shortcomings in the construction and operation of the scaffolding, and promised to address the consequences of the accident.

On the same day, Foreign Minister of the Republic of Korea Yun Byung-se also offered his condolences over the accident.
