NDO - The Vietnamese Academy of Social Sciences (VASS) and the European Union (EU) held a workshop on April 20 to discuss policies aimed at strengthening workers’ rights and the role of trade unions.

VASS Vice President Nguyen Quang Thuan said the EU-funded project “Strengthening Workers’ Rights and Representation” has been implemented with the coordination of the University of Naples "L'Orientale" (UNO) from October 2012 to April 2015.

The project aims to enhance the capacity of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour to supervise and understand workers’ situations, as well as the ability to support workers with legal consultation and awareness of their rights.

Project partners have provided legal advice to workers in some industrial zones in Hanoi, Hai Duong and Vinh Phuc provinces, and held training sessions for trade union officials in these localities.

Dr Michela Cerimele from UNO stressed that empowering workers is one of the focuses of the poverty reduction strategy, with a greater role of trade unions in industrial policies.

She said strengthening the role of workers and trade unions must include expanding their freedoms coupled with enhanced support for workers’ organisations in all sectors of the economy.
